Yeah So's the last I heard involving Popp as well.  I think the 
last few Oval releases haven't involved the CD-skipping action at 
all.

A couple of tracks on the last Gastr Del Sol album (David Grubbs + 
Jim O'Rourke) had some of Popp's skippy-cd antics on them - 
hearing that stuff as beds for fairly straight-up songs showed how 
accessible experimental techniques can be.  If anything I think 
Popp has got less accessible since abandoning the skipping CD 
approach.

Re: So, it *is* hard to reconcile even starting that project with 
getting all strident about the irrelevance of emotional content in 
the music...  I don't know how he could make decisions about what 
he did without some kind of aesthetic consideration.

The source material may be quite tender but the end result's quite 
brutal, I reckon.  Definitely no washy reverbs, spacey granular fx 
or any of the usual lush-sounding treatments I'd usually expect 
from laptop-nerds meet singer-songwriter adventures.

Think I'm going to have to put on the album right now, actually!
