the BORDERLINE BALLROOM at The Media Club, 191 Armagh St, Christchurch, NZ.
The BORDERLINE BALLROOM is an ongoing monthly event series which
brings exploratory and innovative musics to Christchurch ears. We aim
to create a relaxed environment for challenging listening and creative
musicianship locally, and develop a stimulating context and an ongoing
and stable venue and support network for artists working in innovative
and adventurous audio, whether they be living locally or touring from
elsewhere. We have been facilitating artists since May 2007, and in
that time our series has hosted a diverse and outstanding programme of
national and international performers. In 2008 we will be
collaborating again with some previous BB guests, and hosting a few
Christchurch debuts, such as performances by highly acclaimed
international sonic artists Daniel Mensche and Philip Jeck, both
coming to New Zealand via Auckland's Alt Music Festival. Thanks
everyone for your support in 2007, we hope 2008's events pique your
interest...

with:
SAM HAMILTON (Auck)
2008's programme begins with Sam Hamilton, an Auckland audio
practitioner who is one of New Zealand's up and coming
sound artists. He has recently returned to New Zealand from the Amazon
basin where he participated in the Mamori Sound Project, a 2 week
residency run by world renowned sound artist and entomologist
Francisco Lopez, focusing on natural sound environments.
Hamilton has been a major organisational force in Auckland's sonic and
audio-visual culture in the past few years, performing both solo and
in a variety of groups, running his own record label, doing radio
shows, curating the Alelluya Noise Festival from his home in St
Kevin's Arcade, K Rd, programming events for Auckland's experimental
music hub the Wine Cellar, and curating the FPS and Cinema Ascension
Festivals, which focused on sound and image conjunctions and the
tactility of media. The Borderline Ballroom catches Sam on his way to
the Sound in the Cracks festival in Dunedin. We warmly welcome him
back!

THE FAMILY (Chc)
Joining Sam for the Borderline Ballroom's 11th event is The Family, an
eclectic and potentially dysfunctional band of locals who have
gathered together especially for the performance. Karl, (keyboards,
guitar) Richard Neave (guitar) and a "mystery guest" will explore the
complexity of group dynamics and investigate "what results from
bringing together three incongruous musicians, potentially playing in
contraindication (sic) to one another."
