'SUBMARINE' CD RELEASE
THE RENDERIZORS / SANDOZ LAB TECHNICIANS / Dr. SPOOKY
The WUNDERBAR, Lyttelton
FRIDAY FEB 29th
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
THE RENDERIZORS
...are Brian and Maryrose Crook from the Renderers, and James Kirk and
Nathan Thompson from Sandoz Lab Technicians, a sublimely unlikely
supergroup whose early '00s Dunedin collaborations have only
previously been samplable outside their sporadic live performances via
2 songs on the 'Dunedin Sound' double CD (c.2001). Regrouping to
celebrate the release of the album 'Submarine' on US label Last
Visible Dog, the four are gracing Lyttelton with an extremely rare
(and possibly never to be repeated) live performance.
"One might suspect this to be a jarring collision between the free
improv of SLT and the mellow country-esque rock of The Renderers, yet
the music here shows a perfect message of the two ideas. Songs
dissolve into swirls of musical deconstructions, then at times reform
into the recognizable. Throughout this hour long album there is a
sense of drift and the gorgeousness of space"
"The Renderizors are a hybrid of The Renderers and Sandoz Lab
Technicians. When I first heard about the mix I thought that it
probably wasn't that good--but I couldn't have been more wrong. With
SLT in control of the noise and drift, this becomes a giant, spacious
love affair with the Renderers beautiful song-writing talents. These
turn into something more than songs, but the songs are still in there.
I can't help think this feels like the soundtrack to some new Lynch
movie--drifting in and out, occasionally coming into focus for a
ballad."

SANDOZ LAB TECHNICIANS
Legendary 'elder statesmen' of NZ freeform / noise improv, Nathan
Thompson (Eye, Gate, Expansion Bay), Tim Cornelius (Ray Off, Three
Forks), James Kirk (The Stumps, Black Boned Angel, Gate, Throats as
Fine as Needles, King Loser, etc), play Christchurch for the first
time since 2000...
"There's no way on earth that I could pin down what New Zealand's
Sandoz Lab Technicians are doing in mere words. Their sound is way too
complex and genre-bending to be placed in any existing field. I guess
ominous phrases like free noise, primitive layers of feedback and
molten improv work to a certain degree, but I can't help but to feel
rather limited with these descriptions. And beyond the general feel
that such terms invoke, they don't really do this combo justice. None
are really accurate, as it gives the impression that Sandoz Lab
Technicians is solely a noise ensemble. They might not exactly be easy
listening, but in the middle of the intoxicating and sometimes
disturbing amalgam of noise, free jazz and drone there's a sense of
beauty and isolation that is much more seducing than it is alienating.
Just like New Zealand itself, their music can be so calm and placid
but with rawness and magma explosions just gurgling beneath the
surface, waiting to erupt from a fissure somewhere. And when something
does erupt, we get a sonic ambush of freeform cosmic patterns where
the instruments are no longer easily identified"
