(Is this all hype?)

This has been news for a while .. I guess its nice to hear about the cutting of the ribbon
as it were ..

Personally I am kind of impressed how rapidly the current indie music trend managed
to transport itself from home made garage blag and well on the way to international uber
stardom.

I discovered this story .. while innocently watching some indie kids thrash it out in
a chch lane-way one evening .. apparently the guy sitting on the ground singing out of
tune to an out of time rhythm section was the next hottest thing on (cue DFA signing) ..

I suddenly felt very old and decidedly un-hip as I suppressed the urge to unplug the power
and tell the kids to stop making that awful racket!!

There was a unique energy to the impromptu performance though .. and it certainly
created a lot of buzz in the young indie crowd .. . with the full techni-colour qualities
of a myspace reality painted all over the whole situation.

btw .. I want to defend peoples right to share a little abrasive opinion on the list.

Even though cynicism is a little 1990's .. it was this attitude that made NZ creativity
so robust during that period.

In some respects I believe that what can be identified as the indie scene
in Christchurch at the moment would have never been able to flourish in the 90's.

My main curiosity is for the future. Will NZ creativity and innovation be as unique and
distinctive in this new environment of collective empathy?

Keep the nah sayers I reckon .. and we can keep our perspective.
