the BORDERLINE BALLROOM at The Media Club, 191 Armagh St, Christchurch, NZ

framed by the evocative decaying grandeur of the Media Club's Blue Room,
once the ballroom of the historic Winter Gardens, the BORDERLINE BALLROOM is
a Christchurch-based initiative aiming to provide a relaxed space for
challenging listening, and a regular live venue for performative audio
experimentation which supports local practitioners working on the
peripheries of music and sound, while offering a resource for national and
international performers touring the South Island.

JASON KAHN (Sui)
Jason Kahn is a sound and visual artist based in Zurich. His work includes
drawing, sound installation, performance and composition. He was born in New
York, grew up in Los Angeles and relocated to Europe in 1990. Kahn has been
exhibiting his sound and visual works since the late 1990's, and has had
solo and group exhibitions internationally, including museums, galleries and
arts spaces in the USA, Canada, France, Croatia, Germany, Argentina, Egypt,
Poland, Switzerland, Denmark, Austria and Spain. Kahn has performed both
solo and in collaboration with numerous other musicians worldwide, including
Tetuzi Akiyama, Kim Cascone, Dieb13, Arnold Dreyblatt, Kevin Drumm, Erik M,
John Hudak, Brandon Labelle, Jason Lescalleet, Christian Marclay, Norbert
M?slang, David Moss, Gunter Muller, Jon Mueller, Toshimaru Nakamura, Sachiko
M, Sainkho Namtchylak, Evan Parker, Steve Roden, Taku Sugimoto and Otomo
Yoshihide and many others. Originally a percussionist, Kahn later began
integrating live electronics into his playing. He currently performs with
different combinations of percussion, analogue synthesizer or computer. As a
composer, Kahn's work draws on electronic and acoustic sound sources to
create slowly developing compositions imbued with a sense of timelessness.
His work addresses the entity of sound as both a physical and psychological
factor shaping our consciousness. Kahn's sound installations seek to enhance
spatial awareness through sonic intervention, focusing on expanding our
perception to other dimensions of seeing, hearing and feeling a space.
Kahn's sound work has been published on Cut, the CD label he founded in
1997, as well as Sirr, For4Ears, Brombron, Rossbin, Antifrost, Domizil,
ATAK, Table of the Elements, Creative Source, Formed, Longbox Recordings,
Crouton and numerous others. Kahn has given concerts at various festivals,
art spaces and clubs throughout Europe, North and South America, Japan,
Korea, Israel, Turkey, Russia, Lebanon, Egypt and Australia.

CEGESTE (... like an experimental radio show, only not on the radio)

---------------------------------------------------------------

the BORDERLINE BALLROOM is actively seeking performers. We are cross-genre
and non-hierarchical, and interested in providing an outlet for musicians,
composers and audio artists investigating live sonic experimentation of any
variety. We are also interested in experimental side projects, new
collaborations, artists investigating the relationship of audio to other
(live) media, and in people who don't yet consider they have an audience
outside their own headphones. If you would like more details, or have any
questions, please write to us: sally (staticmansion at gmail dot com) or jo
(stanier_black5 at hotmail dot com)

with many thanks to Kim Pieters, Nigel Bunn, Andrew Hensley, Marcus
Wistanley/MAINZ, and the AUDIO FOUNDATION... we couldn't have done it
without you.

Borderline Ballroom has sent you this email as it considers you may be
interested in live experimental audio in Christchurch, although if you would
like to be removed from this mailing list, please write.
