the BORDERLINE BALLROOM at The Media Club, 191 Armagh St, Christchurch, NZ
framed by the evocative decaying grandeur of the Media Club's Blue Room,
once the ballroom of the historic Winter Gardens, the BORDERLINE BALLROOM is
a Christchurch-based initiative aiming to provide a relaxed space for
challenging listening, and a regular live venue for performative audio
experimentation which supports local practitioners working on the
peripheries of music and sound, while offering a resource for national and
international performers touring the South Island.

the BORDERLINE BALLROOM #7
Thursday 25 October 2007
7:30pm - $5, doorsales only
with:
MELA (Chc)
Mela has performed intermittently in and around Christchurch over the last
10 years and is the audio/visual experimental side-project of Helen
Greenfield. Mela's performance at the seventh Borderline Ballroom is her
first performance in almost a year. Layers of repeating melodies, gradually
effected drones, and suitably unrecognisable beats create an imperfect but
mellifluous musical microclimate.
"The performance is the combination of an almost obsessive degree of
preparation with random interjections from misbehaving equipment. During my
30 minute performance I'll eschew any attempt at the perfect performance and
instead employ my newly adopted 'play like Lomo' aesthetic."
DAVID KHAN (Chc)
Performing under his own name since retiring the Drawing Room solo moniker
that endured 1997-2003 and four previous solo albums, David Kahn's latest
work involves playing with both prepared sounds (samples, drones, loops,
etc...) and textures generated live. On his last (and sixth solo) album,
'Music for Piano and Voice' (2007), the main ingredients were grand piano
samples and voice, digitally processed and combined in pieces that explored
the tension between
structure and improvisation.
For this performance for the Borderline Ballroom, the primary sound sources
are stainless steel sheets - either suspended from a frame or clamped at one
end in a bench and vise. Superficially, this performance revisits some
strategies Kahn has used in the past ( i.e. Drawing Room's 'Evolving
Sequence No.1' (2001)) - but hopefully with greater focus and discipline. In
other words, there will probably be quite a bit of space and silence in the
music. Again, prepared sounds will be combined with improvised textures
created live. Kahn will
present three pieces, each around 10min (max) in length.
"The intention is to reflect the basis of the digitally processed
accompaniment with whatever I'm doing live with the metal (i.e., tapping it
with soft mallets or nail punches, stroking it with files or knives)."
HaL (Chc)
" HaL", the duo formally know as "hel", have been performing together for
the past few years around Canterbury. Described as "thin and minimal", they
take their Post-Modernism seriously. The duo tend to rely heavily on
computers to generate and manipulate sound. They perform in constant fear of
a system crash, or one of their old dunger MacIntoshes going up in flames.
They also like wearing hats and coats while they perform, but will attempt
to resist the temptation.

the BORDERLINE BALLROOM is actively seeking performers. We are cross-genre
and non-hierarchical, and interested in providing an outlet for musicians,
composers and audio artists investigating live sonic experimentation of any
variety. We are also interested in experimental side projects, new
collaborations, and in people who don't yet consider they have an audience
outside their own headphones. If you would like more details, or have any
questions, please write to us: sally (staticmansion at gmail dot com) or jo
(stanier_black5 at hotmail dot com)
