Not to labour the point but... I think the fact it's obviously standard practice is why it's unsettling that Wire does it- I mean no-one would be surprised if it was 'Q' or The Herald, f'gawdsake.
Because you can't help but want to feel that Wire is supposed to be looking out for the little guy- giving recognition to artists other glossies wouldn't touch with a barge-pole for their lack of commercial appeal.
And what's more... I can't say for sure, but unlike your example, from the sounds of it The Wire is the one trying to kick-start the incest, not the advertisers. Which sort of makes it either a double- betrayal, or a sleazy-but-necessary-and-lets-not-be-naiive-kids survival tactic, depending on your point of view.
It's still a great magazine, but it sort of makes you wonder how much you aren't reading about that ought to be in there...
