The Wire has to balance books like everyone else.
The review that Stephen posted of the Stumps album is an interesting case.
I stayed with Chris Moon, the guy who runs Last Visible Dog when I was in
the US. He had recently paid several hundred US dollars to place an ad in
the Wire. He had done this because he was perplexed that no one was
reviewing the cds he was posting them.
Someone tipped him off that if he paid for an ad this might change.
Since doing this practically all the CDs he has released since then have
been reviewed.
I should add that I got exactly the same story from the people who run the
twothousandand label...
I still consider The Wire a great zine (despite the fact that they haven't
reviewed any professionally pressed PseudoArcana CD I've sent them besides
the Peter Wright one... (thanks Jon)), but yeah- they necessarily run
according to an all too familiar business model. I guess something to bear
in mind is that without incentivising the advertising they probably wouldn't
have the money to publish at all.
